With Marvel Studios’ latest film just a week and a half away from release, the reviews have begun pouring in. The critics seem to be split on Ant-Man, largely depending on whether or not they found star Paul Rudd’s charm and the scripts humor enough to elevate a less than epic narrative.
Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a mixed review, writing “Having an actor of Douglas’ caliber on board lends the film some gravitas to balance the humor, but it’s the comedy that prevails in a project that is, in a historical sense, integral to the Marvel map of the world but also seems rather on the margins of it.” Justin Chang at Variety appreciates the films smaller sense of scale, compared to some of Marvel’s other offering. Chang writes, “The refreshingly (and literally) down-to-earth scale of Ant-Man is largely a factor of Rudd’s charming performance as the nicest, most boy-next-door cat burglar imaginable.”
