In response to Madonna’s tweet about BBC Radio 1 allegedly banning her new “Living for Love” single because of her age, a spokesperson at the radio station on Thursday told Mashable that they “do not ever ban artists.” The spokesperson added, “The tracks are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis, and whilst around 40 percent of the country’s 15- to 29-year-olds tune into Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.” BBC Radio 1 also referenced Paul McCartney, who is on the station’s rotation at the age of 72 as a guest artist on Rihanna’s “FourFiveSeconds” and Kanye West’s “Only One.”
