Disney’s Maleficent is working its magic on Latin American audiences despite a World Cup-related box-office slowdown.
After one month in theaters, the dark fairy tale starring Angelina Jolie has surpassed the $100-million mark in Latin America and it currently ranks fifth all time among Disney releases in the region behind The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Toy Story 3 and Monsters University.
In Mexico alone, Maleficent has raked in north of $40 million, making it one of the highest-grossing films ever.
The film’s strong performance is all the more impressive considering that it’s competing for audiences against World Cup soccer matches, which are drawing record ratings in futbol-mad Latin America. Mexico, the region’s top moviegoing market, saw attendance figures drop by more than 5 million in mid-June when the World Cup kicked off.
