New Line and Warners’ San Andreas rumbled into theaters Thursday night with a strong $3.1 million for a projected weekend north of $40 million.
The PG-13 movie featuring a helicopter pilot called upon to execute multiple knick-of-time rescues will be playing in 3,777 theaters by Friday. The majority of them are 3D houses. Warners and Village Roadshow co-financed and co-produced the $110 million production, from Warners’ New Line unit. The flick starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is a throwback to the old Irwin Allen disaster flicks of the ’70s and will easily claim the top spot in North America this weekend.
