Leave it to the writers to finally have some fun with the season of all-too-serious awards. Someone was eventually going to give Guardians of the Galaxy, 2014’s top-grossing film in all its goofy, random, spaced-out glory, a serious awards nomination. And that someone was the Writers Guild of America, which honored the Disney/Marvel juggernaut with a nomination for best adapted screenplay on Wednesday. Can Guardians win it? Almost certainly not, but weirder things have happened. It’s up against American Sniper, Gone Girl, The Imitation Game and Wild, none of which featured a talking raccoon or a tree with a single catchphrase.
