If Apple existed in a galaxy far, far away, how would Sir Jony Ive and the rest of Apple’s world-beating technology design team construct a Stormtrooper costume?
That’s the question that led to the creation of the sleek Stormtrooper from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, according to its costume designer. The villainous foot soldiers’ new look is already familiar to millions from the Force Awakens teaser and trailer; it was even on display at Star Wars Celebration. But until now, we didn’t know its inspiration.
Costume designer Michael Kaplan told Vanity Fair’s Bruce Handy, “With the stormtroopers it was more of a simplification, almost like, ‘What would Apple do?’ J.J. [Abrams] wanted them to look like stormtroopers at a glance, but also be different enough to kind of wow people and get them excited about the new design.”
