Sir Ian McKellen says he never had any ambition to play Sherlock Holmes. The Lord Of The Rings star portrays an elderly version of the sleuth, who is showing signs of early dementia, in Mr Holmes, based on Mitch Cullin’s 2005 novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind. Mr Holmes, directed by Bill Condon and also starring Laura Linney, opens in UK cinemas on June 19.
