Cinderella spent its fifth weekend at number one at the Japanese box office, adding another $2 million dollars to take its total in the country to $37.5 million and continue Disney’s winning run in the market.
Like Frozen last year, Cinderella’s success has been boosted by a strong local voice cast, Japanese reworkings of the songs and a portion of audiences going to watch both the subtitled and dubbed versions.
The Maze Runner came in fourth on the chart with a $1.6 million bow from over 130,000 tickets, including its Friday night opening.
However, Japan hasn’t swarmed Neil Blomkamp’s Chappie yet, which brought in fewer than 50,000 admissions on its opening Saturday and Sunday.
