Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. have a long history together, from their SST Records days to their joint tours. Now, Kim Gordon and J Mascis have reunited for a new track titled “Slow Boy.” The indie rock icons paired up to write and perform the song, which will appear on the third Converse compilation, CONS EP Vol. 3.
Mascis produced the fuzzed-out, heavily distorted track, which is reminiscent of Sonic Youth’s abrasive, angsty peak on mid-Eighties albums Sister and EVOL. Dinosaur Jr. were their SST label mates at the time, and prior to that, both acts were briefly aligned with Homestead Records. While Gordon’s vocals are at the forefront of the unrelenting cut, “Slow Boy” also showcases some of Mascis’ gnarling guitar work over the song’s four-minute runtime.
