According to industry analysts, Mad Max: Fury Road is heading for a $40 million opening weekend, Max is facing stiff competition from Pitch Perfect 2, which is poised to debut at equal numbers. Add to that the restrictive R rating and the fact that Avengers: Age of Ultron is still poaching much of the film’s key demographic, and you can see this weekend as a uphill battle.
Warner Brothers is looking to make back the $150 million it put into the film’s budget. The Mad Max sequel had been in some form of development hell for decades before finally beginning production in 2012.
