New Line’s reboot of the Shaft franchise is gaining traction with a pair of writers on board — “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris and “The Goldbergs” executive producer Alex Barnow.
New Line began developing a new “Shaft” earlier this year by acquiring the remake rights and setting up the latest version with producer John Davis.
MGM’s 1971 blaxploitation film featured Richard Roundtree as John Shaft, who navigates New York City to find the missing daughter of a mobster.
The project marks the second reboot to the classic 70s film franchise; Samuel L. Jackson starred as Shaft’s nephew in a 2000 film remake.
