President Barack Obama offered his condolences — including a witty, backhanded reference to himself — after the death of actor Leonard Nimoy. Nimoy, who died Friday, was best known for playing the character of Spock, a nerdy and emotionless half-alien science officer on the long-running sci-fi TV series “Star Trek.” Obama said in a statement, “Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed. I loved Spock.” The president went on to describe his first meeting with Nimoy in 2007 and echoed some of Spock’s signature phrases.
