Whoopi Goldberg was among those mourning Mike Nichols on Thursday and she was so overcome by emotion that her View co-hosts had to deliver the news of his death on Thursday’s show. Goldberg was discovered by Nichols and considered the director to be her mentor. As Nicolle Wallace, Rosie Perez and Rosie O’Donnell recalled Nichols’ contributions to film and Broadway, Goldberg appeared to be crying. She was seen putting her hands over her face and seemed to be shaking so hard that Perez and Wallace tried to console her. The show then aired a clip from a January 2012 episode of The View about mentors, in which Goldberg talked to her mentor, Nichols.
