Sir Michael Caine had Cannes critics in stitches on Wednesday as he held court at a press conference for his new movie, “Youth.” Paolo Sorrentino’s drama features a tour de force performance by Caine as a retired maestro conductor reflecting on the passing of time and memories of his wife, a former singer. Caine’s character, Fred, bitterly refuses a request by Queen Elizabeth to conduct his most famous work at a royal gala – since it used to be performed by his wife. “Youth” is one of 19 films competing for the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize – the Palme d’Or.
