George Clooney’s science fiction fantasy film Tomorrowland disappointed at the box office as Americans steered clear of cinemas in the worst start to the summer since 2001.
Tomorrowland, which cost $180 million (£116 million) to make, was on course to pull in $40.7 million, significantly less than expected, over the Memorial Day bank holiday weekend which traditionally marks the start of Hollywood’s summer blockbuster season.
Overall, films were estimated to have earned 19 per cent less than last year in north America.
It was the lowest amount in 14 years and the result was even worse because cinema ticket prices have risen 44 per cent in that time.
