Denmark is putting its weight behind Nils Malmros ’ Sorrow and Joy in the foreign-language Oscar category. The Danish director is known for his strong autobiographical work, and this film can be considered his most personal film to date. Based on Malmros’ own life, the film tells the story of Johannes, and his schoolteacher wife, Signe, who are hit with one of the worst tragedies that any family could imagine. Signe, in a psychotic fit, has killed the couple’s young child.
