The Light Shines Only There by Mipo Oh will be Japan’s entry for the best foreign-language film Academy Award. The story of an unemployed man’s romance with his friend’s sister won the best director award at the Montreal World Film Festival earlier this week. Oh is hoping to replicate the success of Yojiro Takita’s Departures which went on to win the foreign-language Oscar in 2009 after first winning international recognition in Montreal. The story is based on a novel by Yasushi Sato and features Go Ayano and Chizuru Ikewaki as the two romantic leads.
