See, both Potter and Longbottom were born in late July, “as the seven month dies”. That makes Longbottom Voldemort’s equal acccording to Professor Trelawney’s first prophecy. Though Voldemort ultimately chose Potter, Longbottom could easily have been the Chosen One with a mission to take down the Dark Lord.
